The NZSTCF was established in 1997 to represent the interests of subcontractors and specialty trades in the building and construction industry in industry-wide issues.

The New Zealand Building Subcontractors Federation (NZBSF) has recently been re-named New Zealand Specialist Trade Contractors Federation (NZSTCF).

The NZSTCF is an umbrella body representing the interests of the specialist trade contractor groups. Formed in 1997, the Federation played a leading role in the development of the Construction Contracts Act, passed into law in 2002 to improve cashflow in the industry. The Federation is actively representing the views of its members in other legislation including the Building Act 2004 and the review of insolvency law.

The Federation name change is to ensure wider recognition of the role and skills of its members in the specialist trades which are significant players in the building and construction industry.
