Building Act 2004
The Department of Building and Housing is the agency responsible for administering the Building Act 2004 and associated regulations. It is also responsible for the licensing of building practitioners.
Day to day implementation of the building control system is via local Councils.
The Department is also responsible for writing compliance documents (provided for under the Act. These were previously written by the Building Industry Authority (BIA ) and are known to the industry as the Approved Documents. The Department has also written numerous guidance documents to assist the building controls industry in the implementation and interpretation of the new Act.

Occupational Licensing
Licensing will not be mandatory until November 2010. Practitioners may apply
for some licences on a voluntary basis now. www.dbh.govt.nz/occupational-licensing
